June 5, 2020In actual applications, density board (MDF board) has the problem of "difficult to fix with nails and easy to damage" compared with solid wood, multi-layer board, particle board and other boards. This phenomenon is mainly determined by its material characteristics, structure and processing technology, and the specific analysis is as follows:
1. Loose internal structure and weak fiber bonding.
Density board is a man-made board made of wood fiber, plant fiber or other fiber (such as bamboo fiber) after crushing, gluing, high temperature and high pressure pressing. It relies on adhesives to bond the fibers. Unlike the tight structure of natural wood "wood fiber + duct + cell", its overall structure is uniform, but lacks the texture and directionality of natural wood, resulting in poor nail holding force.Although high-density board (HDF) has a high density (≥880kg/m³), excessive compression of the fibers may lead to uneven distribution of adhesives and local pores; medium- and low-density board (MDF/LDF) has a lower density (450-800kg/m³), with large gaps between fibers, and nails are easy to "slip" or loosen when inserted.
2. High material brittleness and poor impact resistance.
After the fibers of the density board are broken and reorganized, they lose the elasticity and toughness of natural wood. When nails are forcibly inserted, the board is prone to cracking or breaking due to local stress concentration, especially in the edge area.
In addition, the density board has poor waterproofness. After being damp and absorbing water, the fibers expand, the adhesive fails, the board becomes soft, and the structure becomes loose. At this time, inserting or pulling out the nails will further damage the internal fibers and aggravate the degree of damage.
